Ragusa, Sicily

Food porn time! Ragusa’s old town is a UNESCO World Heritage City. It’s located on a hill in between two valleys, divided into two areas: the (new) Ragusa Superior and the (old) Ragusa Ibla.

The symbol of Sicily 'the Triskelion'

Ragusa Ibla is a delight of narrow winding streets and steep steps, featuring lots of Baroque architecture hidden on every turn.

Always 'look up' in Ragusa - the undersides of balconies are often impressive

Its home to the key sights of the city as well:

The Duomo (S. Giorgio Cathedral)

And the Public Gardens – half Italian, half English style with great views over the surrounding valley.

But the highlight for me in Ragusa was the local wine and food-tasting which we did at a wine bar / restaurant called Angelo Vini e Affini – would recommend visiting.

Wine-wise we tried white, red and dessert…

All accompanied with a delicious selection of snacks…

Bruschetta (fresh tomatoes with garlic, basil, olive oil, vinegar served on toasted bread)

I may have 'hogged' this plattter!

Caponata (Sicilian aubergine dish of fried aubergine, celery and capers in a sweet and sour sauce) – a favourite of mine!

Fish on bruschetta

Beef carpaccio

Antipasti selection of cheeses and meats

And pistachio cannoli

Yum yum yum!  Even writing this is making me hungry...

I headed into the town to check out some shops as well…

Purchasing some volcanic rock earrings

And snacking on some fresh fruit in the boiling heat. A good day for food!

A nice place to visit, but easily 'doable' in a day.
