Dubai - food & drink

One of my favourite things about travelling is trying different foods from around the world. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from Dubai’s food though. It turns out that it’s got quite a lot in common with Turkish food though – mezzes and meat which suits me well!

One thing that is a little different about eating and drinking in Dubai though is the rules about alcohol. There’s not a lot of places where you can drink. Hotels are largely the exception, but a lot of non-hotel restaurants don’t have an alcohol licence, so you can’t enjoy a glass of wine with your meal. Residents also need a permit to be allowed to buy alcohol for their homes.

We stocked up at duty free before arriving to ensure we had supplies for our room.

Some snacks included:

Camel milk ice cream! I know this sounds random but actually it was delicious. Really creamy and tasty.  It turns out that camel milk ice cream is actually a healthy treat - low in fat and contains ten times more iron than cow's milk!  It's also thought to have five times the levels of B vitamins than cow's milk ice cream, as well as being high in calcium and a rich source of protein.  Wow - I accidentally stumbled on a new (expensive!) superfood.

Free drinks post our desert tour – a lot of places offer free drinks to ladies and one night the Italian restaurant (Rosso) in our hotel was running this promotion. I’ve never drunk rose champagne such a scruffy outfit before!
