Sledging at Spitzingsattel

One crisp and clear evening some of us decided to head out after work to enjoy the winter.

We wrapped up warm and headed to Spitzingsattel, a small village near Schliersee. Here we left our cars at the bottom of a hill and walked upward through the snow on a pathway / sledging route! It was pitch black, save for some hanging lights illuminating our route as we hiked up past snow and fir trees with a blanket of starts overhead.

Occasionally sledgers would whizz past up downhill and we would jump to the side out of their way – steering isn’t very easy on the sledges!  Here's a video of some others giving it a go.

After 2.5km upwards hike we reached our destination - Berggasthöfe Obere Firstalm. It took about 45 minutes to climb to this cozy wooden Bavarian restaurant.

We were famished and eagerly ordered food.

I chose an indulgent “Kaiserscharm” with apple sauce – essentially chopped up pancake! Delicious – and very generous.

After eating we played games until almost closing time.

Then it was time to get back into our ski-gear and climb onto toboggans to head down the hill!

We piled on, two per sledge, and whizzed downwards. You pick up some serious speed on the downhill trip.

We flew over bumps on the ride – earning ourselves some bruises in the process. I am still sitting gingerly!!

Steering and braking were not very easy and my co-pilot and I even managed an (accidental!) 360’ turn mid-hill. We screamed as we went down – mostly to warn other sledgers of our imminent arrival!

It was great fun – definitely would do again!
