Day 17: 2013 Autumn Travels [Montevideo à Colonia, Uruguay]

After an early breakfast we caught taxis to the bus station where we got a super comfy bus for the 2 ½ hour trip to Colonia.  Despite the short distance, Colonia felt so different from Montevideo.  It was a gorgeously quaint town with cobbled tree-lined streets, little cafes and trinket shops next to the river ‘Rio de la Plata’ across from Buenos Aires.

Colonia is one of the oldest towns in Uruguay and is a world heritage site due to its renowned historic quarter.

We left our bags in our cute little hotel with a courtyard and roof terrace and headed out for a wander along the streets.

We had lunch in ‘El Drugstore’ a plaza-side cafe where they even had tables in cars!  And some very intriguing menu items...bizarrely no-one ordered ‘The Chefs Fantasy’!

I had a coffee and a Chajá – a very sweet cake with meringue, cream, dulce de leche and fruit which was amazing!

Then I had a little solo wander around the town, jewellery shopping before treating myself to a great massage in the cellars of a hotel.

Afterwards I soaked in the sun in a local plaza and then on our roof terrace.

It was one of the group’s birthdays so we all met and grabbed some drinks (more ‘medio y medio’) and headed down to the water to watch the sunset.

I got very excited at spotting a ‘family’ of Diet Coke bottles...especially the conveniently handbag sized addition to the line-up!

Then we had dinner in a lighthouse building overlooking the water, where I had a tasty paella, followed by more cake!
