Life on the farm.

Day 14: 2013 Autumn Travels [Estancia near Mercedes, Uruguay]

Feeling like I needed to move around after sitting on the bus for so long, I decided to get up early and go for a run around the farmland.  I was rewarded with beautiful views and the sun rose over the fields and complete silence which was very peaceful.

I then continued my health streak with a yoga session by the pool, which was great until one of the dogs appeared in my face, drawing my zen-ness to a quick finish!

After a breakfast of orange juice, coffee and omelettes we headed out to work!  We started by milking a cow, which is a lot harder than you’d think...

Then we went cow herding, moving the masses of cows into another field.

Afterwards we went for a good walk around the fields surrounding the farm in the sunshine.

For lunch we had spaghetti bolognaise  and ‘pudim de pão’ aka bread pudding flavoured with caramel.

Then we had some downtime and took the opportunity to sunbathe by the pool.

Next we learnt how to make bread, creating our own bread rolls for breakfast the following day.

Finally we learnt how to make dolce de leche – basically milk, sugar and a little bicarbonate of soda stirred over heat for an hour.

Then we sampled mate, a traditional South American infusion drink which is highly caffeinated and made from soaking dried yerba mate leaves in hot water.  It’s a bitter drink with a tea-like ceremony where groups of people get together to drink it.

It’s served in a hollow calabash gourd with a silver metal straw (a bombilla).  We would continue to see a lot of people carrying thermos and their mate cups throughout our trip.

In the evening one of our group and the farm’s owner treated us to music on their guitars whilst we had group sing-alongs.

Dinner was roast chicken with potatoes followed by some delicious caramel pancakes which we’d been very excited about since spotting earlier in the day!

Then we headed outside to sit around a big bonfire and melt smurf-shaped marshmallows!
